News: Planned power cut - Wednesday 15 October

There will be a planned power cut in Chilbolton on Wednesday 15 October 2025 lasting from 09:00 until 16:00. The Village Shop will be shut that day, and the Abbots Mitre will be closed until 4pm.

If you will be affected by this, you will have received a letter from Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks a couple of weeks ago. If you are on their priority list, you will also have received a phone call four to six weeks ago.

The power cut is to allow trimming and removal of tree branches that could damage power lines.

Village Shop

Nicky Bond, from Chilbolton Village Shop and Tearoom says that neither the shop nor the Post Office will open that day. She and her staff will take the opportunity to do a deep clean.

If you have vouchers for a newspaper, or wish to order a newspaper for Wednesday, you should provide your voucher or payment before Wednesday. Newspapers will be left in the black box outside for collection.

Abbots Mitre pub

The Abbots Mitre will be shut on Wednesday until 4pm, when the power comes back on.

Advice from Scottish and Southern

SSE advise residents to:

  • Set the temperature of your fridge/freezer to the coldest setting 12 hours before the power cut
  • Do not open your fridge/freezer unless you have to
  • Charge your phone/laptop and other electrical devices the night before
  • Turn your solar panels off before they turn the power off
  • Boil a kettle before they turn the power off
  • Your security alarm may beep while the power is turned off. Contact your alarm provider so they can tell you how to stop this happening
  • Your WiFi won’t work while your power is off. Disconnect Smart Equipment before the power goes off and comes back on, such as boiler controls, TVs etc.
