Analysis: What is a Charitable Community Benefit Society?

The work to establish Chilbolton Community Land Trust (CCLT) is underway. Community Land Trusts are an international phenomenon, that started in the United States. Here in the UK there are various ways of incorporating one, but the SWG have indicated that “CLT will be a charity (but regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, rather than the Charities Commission)”. This suggests that CCLT will be what is known as a Charitable Community Benefit Society (CCBS).

Comment: Getting a grip, but questions to answer

There was much to applaud at last Monday’s Parish Council meeting. Disaster had been averted with the “faulty” planning pre-application being “paused”. The Strategy Working Group has been tasked with rewriting it: it will cover only the 25 properties, located at the southern end of the plot near Eastman’s Field. When it’s finished villagers will be able to see it.

News: Parish Council divided over proposed 25-home development

The Chilbolton Parish Council meeting last night was a tense affair marked by disagreements between councillors, a vote, and sharp exchanges between the Chair and villagers who had attended the meeting. At the heart of the disagreements was the governance of its plans to build 25 new homes in the village.
